What was your best day at Woodson?

I'm getting tired of reading my own words, so I want to try something different.

I'm not going to post anything else until Saturday or Sunday, because I want to see if I can get those of you who are faithfully visiting this site to speak up. When you comment, you can establish an identity, or if that's a pain, blog as anonymous and just include your name in the post.

What I want to know -- and I'm not going to start you off with my own -- is what was your best day at Woodson. Most of us were there from September 1963 to June 1967. You can pick any day except one. It can't be graduation. I don't want to hear that your best day was your last one.

Let's have a conversation.

I'll add my own later.

Mike, I think that's a tough one for me. I can think of bad days, there were several, but the best day, I will have to ponder a while.

Best times may have been hanging out at Cleves pizza or cruising Tops drive-in.

Worst day, I know, but that's another question!

I liked the class times spent in the planetarium !
Computer Programming class was always interesting. I remember Denny talking one day with our instructor[Cane???] while looking at the back of a huge computer. He wanted to know why only 2 'spaces' for the year date......
The year 2000 seemed an eternity away back then.

I know I will come up with more than this given some time. Does anyone remember going to all those dances held at fire houses, churches, etc.? They were usually on a Friday night, I think. There was a church down off of Columbia Pike that had some great bands. I also met a lot of people from Annandale High School at that one. I think the dances cost $1 or $2. I loved to dance back then and it was something my girlfriends and I could do without dates (which was often!!!).

Hey, Dale. Not ready to give my comment yet, but I think the church was St. Alban's. My buddies and I discovered it in the summer of 1969, and danced endlessly to too many versions of "In A Gadda Da Vida."

My best days were probably those with the women's varsity basketball team. We were the first undefeated team at Woodson.

When Carol Pallesen and I stopped by Woodson a few years ago there was a display in the sports hall of all the undefeated teams and our 1967 team was featured (along with others since). But back then, women sports weren't even on the radar screen...

The long term benefit of playing sports in high school is that it trains you to want to exercise and play sports. This inclination has helped to keep me healthy as we age ...unlike my Mom's generation which never embraced exercise or women sports.

I definitely remember St. Albans dances, that's where I met Don in November 1966. I also remember going to the American Legion on RT 50. We saw several good bands play there including the Turtles ... remember CHERISH and HAPPY TOGETHER. Do you remember the outlandish bell bottoms we wore! I wish I had kept some but they would hardly fit now!

I thought a little about my own best day, and the choice came down to two. I almost picked the first time I was on "It's Academic," which meant a lot to me, but the day I picked was one that wasn't a success.

As a junior, I was one of three candidates for president of student government. I didn't win -- I like to think I finished second, but who knows -- but the day that meant the most to me was getting up in front of four class assemblies and giving my campaign speeches.

I was 16 years old, and it was one of the first times at Woodson that I felt I was starting to grow up.

Mike - to you and the others who were brave enough to get up in front of others, my kudos. I was too chicken and still am. Dale

Darla - you were hot stuff! My first year at WTW was sophomore year and you were in my gym class (6th period). One of the semesters we had modern dance and no matter how hard each of us worked on our routine, you would get up there an show all us amateurs how the professional does it. I was in awe!
