Not just getting older, getting better

We started our family retirement tour this weekend, checking out places we might consider retiring to in 2010 after we sell our overvalued L.A. area home.

We spent the weekend in a fascinating little community just outside Tehachapi. It's called Bear Valley Springs, and it's got great mountain homes with fabulous views for less than $400,000. To those of you not living in our state, that may sound ridiculous. Well, I don't blame you. California housing prices are ridiculous.

Anyway, we returned home feeling pretty good and I found the reunion CD in the mailbox. Thought I'd post this picture for all of you. Figured it was a nice start and an easy post after a four-day weekend.

So remember when you look at the picture, Class of '67: We're not just getting older, we're getting better.

And as the great south Florida philosopher James Buffett once said, "I'm growing older but not up."

I think it is never too early to be thinking about where you want to settle down later on. I have been doing that for over 10 years and have enjoyed every one of the trips. As a matter of fact, I am off (tomorrow) to the place I thought I would be retiring to 2 years ago, St. Simons Island, GA. Now, I am not so sure. I love it more than any other place I have visited and lived (lived in St. Simons back in '75-76), but now am thinking it is going to just be a place I go to visit my other home. All I know is that my ideas of what a perfect retirement area is 'for me' keep changing and I am glad I am able to realize that. One thing that I have come to realize is that I do not want to move somewhere and leave my friends; not yet, anyhow.

I will not be 'blogging' for a week due to this trip but hope you guys keep it going.

We looked all over the west -- Washington State, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon....before coming east to retire in Lexington VA. Guess it depends on what you want or need or value. We don't need malls or traffic. We like history and small town relationships. Strange since we lived in San Diego for 26 years but we did live in an old historical neighborhood.

Retirement is fun. Never thought it'd be so easy to adapt to non-work.
